General Information

The formal pond has straight and unfussy lines and can be either circular, square or rectangular. Ideally this pond will be situated near the house or in an area of hard landscaping, such as a patio or semi hard landscaping such as a gravelled area.

Set at ground level and approx 0.6m deep it has marginal planting shelves (generally in the corners) which are best planted out with more formal plants that do not spread outwards but generally tend to grow upwards in a neat and more formal way. There are many moisture loving ornamental grasses, some of which are evergreen, as well as other formal plants to choose from.

These types of pond have great potential as still waterlily ponds, although they do also lend themselves to formal single jet fountains.

Formal ponds can be filtered if required.

Construction

A reinforced concrete collar is constructed around the perimeter of the pond approx 110-150mm below surrounding ground level. This enables the single course of bricks which go around the edge to half sit in the water so that the liner can go up behind them and be hidden at water level.

Planting shelves are constructed from underground grade Thermalite blocks set approx 200mm under water level. The pond is pre lined with soft sand and a geo textile underlay and lined with 0.75mm quality butyl liner. The liner comes with a manufacturer's 'lifetime' guarantee to ensure that it will never go brittle or perish. It is finished off with bricks laid on their side as the edging or with a slab edging (not for round ponds).
