Water features are very popular and can be a cost effective way to introduce water into the garden. They can also be easily made to be child friendly as often there is little or no water showing; rather cobbles, paving or aggregate.

Firstly, you have to decide what the most important idea behind the feature will be, that is to say whether the interest lies primarily in making a certain type of noise for the garden: splashing, bubbling or a gentle tinkling of water, for instance. Or maybe it is the look of a particular material or a shape that would look good in a certain area of the garden, or even a statement that you would like to make.

Once you have an idea what it is that you would like to achieve with the feature, it becomes much easier to choose where it will go and what it will look like.
