General Information

Koi ponds come in all shapes and sizes, both formal and informal, and are generally made from either butyl rubber or concrete and fibreglass.

All our Koi ponds have a gravity fed filter system fed by a 110mm bottom drain run by an external pump which pumps back through a venturi aerator, with all pipework being fully valved. Koi ponds do not usually have aquatic plants in them as the Koi tend to destroy them, although provision can be made for protected planting areas if required. Extras such as mid feeds, heaters and sand filters can all be priced on request.

Construction (Butyl Lined)

A reinforced concrete collar is constructed around the perimeter of the pond approximately 110-150mm below surrounding ground level. This enables the edging or small wall (if the pond is to be raised above ground level) to have a permanent and level footing to sit on.

After excavation and installation of the 110mm dome covered bottom drain (at the lowest point) the pond is pre lined with soft sand and a geo textile underlay and lined with 0.75mm quality butyl liner. The liner comes with a manufacturer's 'lifetime' guarantee to ensure that it will never go brittle or perish.

It is finished off with a brick, slab or rock edging for ground level ponds, or 0.6m high double thickness brick wall finished with coping or brick on edge, for raised ponds, with the liner sandwiched in between the courses of bricks so that it cannot be seen at or immediately below water level. All pipework is System 2000 poly pipe solvent weld (or ABS pressure pipe for sand filters) and is fully valved.

Construction (Fibreglassed)

The pond is excavated approximately 350mm wider and 150mm deeper than the finished pond will be.

The 110mm domed bottom drain is installed (at the lowest point) and then a reinforced concrete floor is put in. A 225mm hollow concrete wall is constructed for the sides (up to ground level) and then backfilled with concrete and 10mm mild steel reinforcing rods. If the wall is to go above ground level then the facing wall is generally bricks with the (unseen) inside wall being 110mm solid concrete blocks. On the inside of the wall the 110mm concrete blocks stop two courses of bricks short of the top. (This is so that after the pond has been fibreglassed two courses of class B semi engineering bricks can be laid to hide the fibreglass at water level).

The pond is then rendered and subsequently fibreglassed with two layers of 1.5oz matting soaked in resin finished off with a gel/flow coat in colour of choice (black or British racing green are recommended). The gel/flow coat is mixed with a waxing agent to stop the leaching out of any styrene (which the fish do not like). The pond is then washed out with a hot malachite solution and is ready to be filled. Fibreglass comes with a 20 year guarantee.
